Jamal became Howard Brown’s President and Chief Executive Officer on June 1, 2010. Prior to becoming CEO, Jamal was partner in the international law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he was one of the firms few openly-gay partners, and the firm’s first in Chicago. Kirkland & Ellis LLP has served as Howard Brown’s primary outside counsel since 2007, and Jamal was instrumental in developing and managing that relationship and briefly served as general counsel to Howard Brown’s Board of Directors prior to his appointment as President & CEO. In 2009, Jamal served as a co-chair of Howard Brown’s “Bertha’s Ball,” one of Howard Brown’s most successful galas. Jamal is currently Treasurer of the Alliance of Chicago Community Health Centers, L3C, a Trustee of the Ravenswood Healthcare Foundation, and Chair of the Alliance for Community Research, Engagement and Support. Jamal has been active in the Chicago nonprofit and LGBT community since 2002, serving as a Graduate Legal Fellow at the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, after which he was appointed to the ALCC’s Board of Directors in 2004 and later elected as ALCC’s President from 2006 to 2008. Jamal also served on the Board of Directors for Vital Bridges, helping to provide food, nutrition and housing for people with HIV/AIDS, where he was Vice Chair from 2008 to 2009. Jamal earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with minors in accounting and religion from Morehouse College, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. He is also a licensed attorney in the states of Illinois and Michigan and multiple federal jurisdictions.
